Monash Sport Swim Squad
To provide swimmers with an introduction to competition squads and to produce swimmers capable of swimming competitively in all four strokes. The Monash University Pool has a well-established development squad program.
Squad Structure
Swimmers who have progressed and developed through the Monash Sport Learn to Swim program, will advance into the squad program. The Stroke Development squad is the first step, where coaches will continue to focus on a swimmers technique while developing good training principles and an increased aerobic development. This will occur through the longer duration of each lesson and the encouragement to increase the number of sessions per week. From the Stroke Development squad swimmers will move into the State or National Squad depending on their age and commitment to swimming. Any transfer will occur in consultation with the child’s swimming coach. For a diagrammatic view of progression, see below:

Stroke Development Squad
The Stroke Development Squad is the next step in a swimmers development. Once they have completed level 5 and understand the basics of swimming, they are now ready to build their confidence and keep progressing.
Swimmers are encouraged to participate in multiple sessions per week to help build their confidence, fitness and endurance, while improving their technique.
Training times
Sessions: 1-4 sessions per week are available at this level.
Important information:
The main aims of this squad are fine-tuning swimmer’s technique and providing an introduction to structured training sessions.
Swimmers are encouraged to become members of the Monash University Swimming Club to provided swimmers the opportunity to use the skills they are developing, in a racing environment. Swimmers will be encouraged to attend swimming competitions suitable to their level.
Moving to the State Squad is based on ability and commitment and is at the coach’s discretion.
Swimmers require a wet-bag to carry their drink bottle, a short pair of fins and a pull buoy. These can be purchased at pool reception.
Once a month on a Friday night a "Come and Try" sprint swim meet is held. Swimmers are introduced to competition in a non-threatening environment.
STATE / National Squad
Training Times

Note: Squad swimmers need to be at the pool 15 minutes early (i.e. 5:00am for a 5:15am start)
State Squad
This squad is for swimmers who aim to compete at school or club swimming carnivals or for health and fitness reasons.
Sessions: Swimmers can attend between 1 and 4 sessions per week. There is also a dry-land session held each Saturday morning after training from 7:15 - 7:45am.
Important information:
Swimmers need to be members of the Monash University Swimming club in order to compete.
Moving to the National squad is dependant upon the swimmers ability, commitment, training capacity and coach’s discretion.
Swimmers require a wet bag to carry their drink bottle, a short pair of fins and a pull buoy. These can be purchased at pool reception.
Swimmers will be encouraged to attend swimming competitions suitable to their competition level.
National Squad
The main aim of this squad is Age & Open Nationals. For younger swimmers the aim is competing at an Age National level with an ambition to achieve National Age Finals and Open National Qualifying times.
Training times
Sessions:
Swimmers are required to attend 5 - 10 sessions per week, depending on the swimmer's age and in consultation with the Head Coach. (This does not include dry-land.)
Swimmers are also required to attend 3 gym sessions and 1 sports psychology session per week. Monash University has one of the best equipped gyms in Australia. National swimmers, aged 13 years and above will do a specifically designed strength program for swimmers.
Important information:
The main aim of this squad is competing at an Age National level with an ambition to achieve National Age Finals and Open National Qualifying times.
Swimmers need to be members of the Monash University Swimming Club in order to compete.
Swimmers require a wet bag to transport their drink bottle, a short pair of fins, a pull buoy, a chinagraph pencil, recording sheet, paddles and a pull band. These can be purchased at pool reception.
Swimmers will be advised which swimming competitions are best to attend.
Tri-swim Squad
As well as providing for competitive swimmers, Monash Sport also caters for those who enjoy their swimming and wish to do regular training as a means for fitness, enjoyment and social competition.
The Tri-Squad is designed for Masters, Tri-Athletes, Open Water swimmers and those who can swim at a reasonable level.
This squad is run out of both the main pool and variable pool depending on the training time and allocated space.

Monash University Swimming Club
Since its establishment at the commencement of the 2002 Swimming Season, the Monash University Swimming Club has been developing itself into a serious swimming club. Ross Price is the current Head Coach of the Monash University Swimming Club. The main focus of the swimmers is to obtain State and National Level results.
With increasing members, direction and results, Monash University Swimming Club is looking to establish itself among Victoria’s Top 5 Swimming Clubs.

Club Morning
The Monash University Swim Club runs time-trials once a month on a Saturday morning from 6am to 7:30am. Swimmers will train from 5:15 to 6:00 and then participate in the time trials. Breakfast catered for by the swimming club will be provided following the completion of the trials. State and National swimmers should include Saturday mornings in their training schedule, however any squad swimmer is welcome to attend and compete.
