World Uni Games 2009Tuesday 14 JulyThe World Uni Games has just wrapped up in Belgrade, Serbia. Featuring eight talented Monash University student athletes, they all represented Monash, and Australia proudly. From an Australian team perspective, this was our best result ever. Please see the media release from Australian University Sport. (224kb .pdf) Four Monash University student athletes competed outstandingly to make it through to finals in their chosen sport, Joel Pocklington – Pole Vault, Amy Cockerton – Swimming, Sarah Graham – Basketball and Laura Cornford – Javelin. Alison Bai – Tennis made it through to the third round of competition which was no mean feat, and Dale Stevenson who competed in Discus and Shot Put was only centimetres away in both disciplines from making it through to a final. At the Monash University function to farewell the athletes, Amy expressed her thankfulness for the support she has received from Monash University, explaining that “one of the main reasons she wanted to study at Monash was because it was an Elite Athlete Friendly University”. The outstanding achievement of the games was by the womens basketball team, featuring Science student Sarah Graham. The team won a bronze medal in what can only be described as a fantastic all round performance. Against a tough Czech Republic team, Australia fought off many comebacks to come out on top, winning 88 to 77. Congratulations to all involved!
