Triathlon Victoria and Monash University Partnership

Triathlon Victoria’s new offices at Monash University Peninsula campus will be officially opened by state member of parliament The Honourable James Merlino, Minister for Sport, Recreation and Youth Affairs, on Thursday 8 October.

Mr Merlino will also be announcing the new partnership between Triathlon Victoria and Monash University. The partnership is expected to provide a range of mutual benefits to both parties, including giving Victorian triathletes the edge in national level competition.

Martin Doulton, Director of Sport at Monash University commented;

“I strongly commend Triathlon Victoria for their foresight in being one of the first State sporting bodies in Australia in basing their offices at a University campus.”

“Monash University is obviously very excited at the opportunity to partner Triathlon Victoria in a range of programs and services which will not just strengthen the Sport In Victoria and Australia but also assist many others members of the community become more physically active.”

There will be a number of collaborations that will assist both partners to achieve their outcomes that a number of collaborations and opportunities will be of as greater benefit to Triathlon Victoria as much as the University.

One such collaboration is the access to cutting edge sports science training technologies with their application at development and junior levels - not just as elite levels which as well as adding to the body of knowledge on the various training elements will assist the coaches and athletes better prepare for competition.

Triathlon Victoria will also now be able to further extend their grass roots and development programs through education pathways at Monash University.  The Student Health and Education Program (SHEP) was developed by Monash University staff, and identifies talented athletes at a grassroots level.

With Triathlon Victoria now a key partner of Monash University, any talented youngster identified by the SHEP program will now have access to a ready made pathway to elite sport and university study. Monash University can provide a support pathway for athletes to undertake tertiary studies and maintain their sporting commitments.

Jamie Huggett recently competed at the World Triathlon Championships on the Gold Coast from 9 to 13 September and is one of around 200 such athletes supported by the University’s Elite Student Athlete Support Program.
