Southern Uni Games 2009 -5 out of 6 Monash teams win medals!Tuesday 14 JulyThe Southern University Games (SUG), a smaller, local version of the Australian University Games, was held last week, July 5-8. Monash had 6 teams competing in the Regional Championship - Mens AFL, Mens Waterpolo, Mens Hockey, Mens Badminton, Mens Basketball and Ultimate Frisbee, all competing extremely well. Mens Badminton thrashed every team they came up against, winning Gold in their final against La Trobe, 4 – 1. Kelvin Yuen was the player of the tournament, not losing a set all week. Low on numbers but high on heart, Mens Hockey also came home with the gold, beating La Trobe 4 – 0 in the final. Michael Starke was strong in defence all week, with Tom Florence and Jack Garner holding up the mid field. Also low on numbers, mens waterpolo had no one on the bench all week, but their skill and determination got them 3 wins out of 6 games, finishing 2nd in the small pool of 3, earning them a silver medal. Disappointment for Mens Basketball, with two extremely close loses putting them in the playoff for 5th place. The boys played extremely well in this game, thrashing Deakin Uni 78 – 50. The Monash Ultimate Frisbee team, keen to see how they’d go against 2008 AUG gold Medallists Flinders Uni, were unbeaten up until the final. They met Flinders for the first time all week in the Gold medal match and it was a hard fought, and extremely close Game. Monash came away with the silver, 12 – 17. After a slow start to the week, Mens AFL turned it on when it counted, making the Gold medal match, easily beating Victoria University 69 – 44. The player of the tournament Adam Bailey, missed the final due to injury, however inspired his team mates to a courageous victory. Michael Towan and Leigh Stevens were best on ground, dominating in the centre, with Layton Allan kicking a match winning 5 goals. Congratulations to everyone involved, particularly the Coaches and Managers of each team. For full results, please click here. |
