Friday 11 September

Katie Bird - Media Intern

Through outstanding sport performance, Monash University has been the subject of vast media coverage with articles covering the fantastic performances of its many sporting clubs and teams appearing on television, online and in the Herald Sun, as well as local newspapers around Melbourne in the past month.

With many sports drawing toward their respective finals competitions, Monash University clubs have shown their strength emerging as top contenders in their fields.

Monash University Central netball club has had an outstanding season this year putting in an impressive showing in the Victorian Netball League semi-finals.  While going down to arch rivals Hume City Falcons, the second placed team earned themselves a second chance match against Genesis to continue their finals ambitions.

Other Monash sporting performances include strong showings this season from the men’s and women’s baseball sides as they each strive for grand final births.

As well as the media coverage surrounding the performances of Monash University’s sporting teams, much interest has been shown in the sporting facilities and events held at Monash university.  These include the Volleyball Friendship Tour which saw Monash University play host to Tianjin Polytechnic University.

Monash was also the stage for FOX8’s Football Superstar television series earlier this year and has played host to the Melbourne Victory whilst their home ground undergoes repairs.

The sporting success and enthusiasm shown by Monash University’s sporting teams comes after Monash researchers pointed toward the benefits regular physical exercise has to maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
