Monash Swimmers raise the bar
Friday 31 July
Monash University Swimming Club (MUSC) have a history of developing young juniors that go on to great things in their professional swimming careers.
Brenton Rickard, Pat Murphy and Daniel Lee are all fine examples of swimmers who were once with, and in Daniel’s case, still is training with the MUSC.
Rickard became the first Australian in 45 years to win an Olympic or world breaststroke title, taking 0.33sec off Kosuke Kitajima's 100m world record to claim gold in 58.58sec on 29 July.
Rickard said the world record was "a nice thing" but he had never cared about times, only medals.
"Times don't really matter, people win races, not times," he said.
Murphy has been on the Australian team since 2005, specialising in the 200m freestyle and gaining a berth on many relay teams.
Lee shot to international recognition with his place on Sri Lanka’s 2008 Olympic team, competing in the 50m freestyle.
The next wave of swimmers arising from MUSC’s ranks are well placed to continue this tradition, with seven swimmers named in Victorian development squads.
Congratulations to the following swimmers, who will represent Victoria in upcoming events around the country.
Alex Harris - SWD (Swimmer with a disability) Squad

David Parr - Bronze Squad – Named on the Victorian Team to race at South Australian Short Course Championships

Rickard completed a Bachelor of Science in 2006 at Monash University, and continues to study online at Monash University.
