Monash University has recently announced that it will be supporting the Connecting With Indigenous Communities Foundation (CWIC) at this year’s Sport Awards.

CWIC was founded in January this year by Monash Law and Performing Arts student Samantha Gash as an attempt to help raise awareness among Victorian University students of the conditions faced by Indigenous Australians.

“University students, despite their further education, have limited knowledge of Indigenous Australians, their struggles and way of life” said Samantha.

The program aims to achieve greater awareness of the problems facing Indigenous Australians through volunteer programs allowing Victorian University students to spend a month helping out in a remote community.

“CWIC believes there can only be positive benefits from increasing the quality and frequency of interactions between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians” said Samantha.

As well as the partnership with Monash University which will see donations made to CWIC from Sport Award tickets and door collections Samantha will be raising $25,000 by competing in the 2010 Atacama crossing as part of 'RacingThePlanets 4 Deserts' event.  The event will see Samantha cross 250 kilometres of the driest desert in the world in six days.
