Chancellor’s Cup a great success
The 2008 Chancellor’s Cup was blessed with perfect golfing weather as a field of 83 players took to the newly-soaked Kingston Heath course on 25 March.
Heavy rainfall the night before had organisers concerned the 10th annual event would be marred by bad weather but the rain held off and players finished the 18 holes in sunshine.
Players on the day included Chancellor Dr Alan Finkel, Vice-Chancellor Professor Richard Larkins, sponsors, alumni and invitees.
Golfers were competing to place their name on the perpetual Chancellor’s Cup trophy, on display at Monash Sport Clayton Campus.
Play started at 7:30am with a shotgun start for all competitors, under the guidance of golfing professional David Tapping.
A team from principal sponsor Fulton Hogan took the major prize, which included having their names on the perpetual trophy and winning a free round for four people at Kingston Heath.
Professor Larkins showed his knowledge of golf, correctly answering a tricky question to help his team win a tiebreaker in the table trivia competition.
Dr Finkel gave a speech at a luncheon in the Kingston Heath Club House, where he spoke on the achievements of Monash University, his planned spaceflight in 2009 and a recent foray into golf lessons.
“My (golf) instructor told me never to have more than 300 thoughts in my head when swinging for a ball,” Dr Finkel told the crowd.
Ranked third in Australia and with a world ranking of 21, Kingston Heath Golf Club is not only one of Australia's, but also one of the world's leading golf Clubs.
Over 83 years, it has hosted seven Australian Opens, seven Australian Match Play Championships, two Tournament Players Championships, seven Victorian Opens and the first British Open Qualifying round to be held in Australia.
