Baseball heartache for Monash Women

It was so near and yet so far for the Monash University Women’s Baseball team, going down to old rivals Melbourne Uni 8-7 in a tense grand final at Cheltenham.

The Monash hitters began with a sizzling five run rally but Melbourne hit back immediately to level the scores. Another three run rally spelt trouble for Monash, then pitcher Vic Brown asserted control, and Monash fought back to within a run of levelling the game.

A crucial double play with bases loaded kept the lead for Melbourne then tight defence next innings froze Monash keeping a runner on third base.  Monash couldn't get a runner on base in the final innings and for the second year running had to settle for a one run grand final defeat to their arch enemies.

Giving good support to Brown were short-stop Shona O’Connell, centre fielder Shirlie Loon and catcher Janine Cavanagh who all hit well.
