Mothers Day Classic

Sunday 11 May, 2008

Participant information sheet (pdf 450k)

What is the Mothers Day Classic?

The Mothers Day Classic is the biggest community fundraising event for breast cancer in Australia. With over 22,000 people participating in Victoria alone, this national walk/run event gives people the chance to make a real difference to the lives of those diagnosed with breast cancer.

All proceeds from the Mothers Day Classic are donated to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation that promotes and supports research for the prevention and treatment of breast cancer.

This year we are aiming to have over 1000 TeamMONASH participants. We encourage those who have previously attended to take part again and bring their family and friends.

Starting on St Kilda Road in the Melbourne CBD, the route takes walkers and runners through the beautiful, scenic botanical gardens. Participants who are entering as part of TeamMONASH™ can choose between the:

  • 4km walk
  • 4km run
  • 8km walk
  • 8km run

Pre-event function/Uniform collection

On Tuesday 29 April we hosted a pre-event function to bring all 2008 participants, volunteers and key stakeholders together.

Two highlights of the night were the inspirational presentations given by Monash University student Ms Melanee Hermocilla and Chair of Womens Health, Professor Susan Davis. These women reminded us that it is important not only to support research for a cure, but also to be aware that we must support those who have survived the disease.

If you were unable to attend the pre-event function, you can collect your TeamMONASH™ participant top on the event day from our marquee.

Helpful tips to ensure your Mothers Day Classic runs smoothly

The following is merely a guide, as each individual’s training needs differ. Please contact your doctor before engaging in any extensive exercise program.

  • How can I avoid dehydration?
Rain, hail or shine the Mothers Day Classic will go on, as will dehydration! Hydration is an important part of any type of exercise that you engage in. It is something people generally overlook and by the time you feel thirsty your body is already suffering from the onset of dehydration.
Make sure you drink plenty of water and top up on electrolytes (sports drinks) in the days leading up to the event. Avoid alcohol the day before or dairy-based drinks on the day of the event.
  • What should I eat the night before?
For those of you tackling the 8km/4km run you will need to ensure you top up on carbohydrates the night before the event. Foods such as rice, pasta, and potatoes are an excellent source of carbs. Try to avoid heavy foods such as steaks and fried food!

8km/4km walkers should also aim to eat a light meal but need not load up on carbohydrates.
  • What should I wear?
The average forecast for Melbourne during April is around 17 degree Celsius but remember in Melbourne anything can happen.

It is important to be aware the Mothers Day Classic is not a fashion show. Make sure you are wearing clothing you are comfortable in (check weather details night before). As part of TeamMONASH? and to be united as a team we encourage you to wear the issued sports top.

  • Footwear
As nice as it is to have brand new pair of shoes on the day it is vital you have ‘run’ them in so as to avoid any discomfort during your event.
  • Pre-Event Warm Up
For each event there will be a warm up at the Monash Sport Marquee. Warm up is an important part of letting your body know that you are about to engage in exercise and helps prevent injuries and some soreness.

Volunteering - Can you lend a hand?

As a member of the TeamMONASH™ Support Crew you have the opportunity to enjoy the fun and the experience of the Mothers Day Classic without even raising a sweat.

All volunteers receive a certificate, an official Support Crew t-shirt, and access to the TeamMONASH™ marquee on the day.

All volunteer positions for the Mothers Day Classic have been filled. If you are interested in volunteering, we have a number of events throughout the year. The next events are the Melbourne Marathon and Around the Bay in a Day bike ride.
