What is the Melbourne Marathon?

The Melbourne Marathon is an exciting event for participants of all ages and fitness levels. There are running and walking opportunities ranging from 5.5km up to 42.2km. All events will start and finish at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

At the conclusion of the event you can also 'hang out' with other TeamMONASH™ members in our VIP Marquee which offers massage, drinks and snacks for all team members.

Each year Monash University enters a team in the Melbourne Marathon.

  • In 2005 TeamMONASH™ had 100+ runners
  • In 2006 TeamMONASH™ had 100+ runners
  • In 2007 TeamMONASH™ had 300+ runners
  • In 2008 Monash will celebrate its 50th Anniversary and our target is 500 runners!

Melbourne Marathon supports charity work

The Cerebral Palsy Education Centre (CPEC) is the charity linked to this event. The entire entry fee goes to the Melbourne Marathon organisers -TeamMONASH™ does not receive any of the fee. CPEC generates funds only through walkers/runners which take on the fundraising challenge.

All TeamMONASH™ participants are encouraged to seek sponsorship from their friends, family and colleagues to help support CPEC. This provides educational, financial and personal support to disadvantaged Australian children.

Training

The best way to know you can cover your chosen distance is to train. You can get active in different ways and we are here to assist. Please visit our Melbourne Marathon Training page for a suggestion training program.

If you don't want to train alone, join the Monash Sport Clayton running group every Tuesday night at 6pm, which caters for beginners through to advanced.

Helpful tips to ensure your Melbourne Marathon runs smoothly

The following is merely a guide, as each individual’s training needs differ. Please contact your doctor before engaging in any extensive exercise program.

  • How can I avoid dehydration?
Rain, hail or shine the Melbourne Marathon will go on, as will dehydration! Hydration is an important part of any type of exercise that you engage in. It is something people generally overlook and by the time you feel thirsty your body is already suffering from the onset of dehydration.
Make sure you drink plenty of water and top up on electrolytes (sports drinks) in the days leading up to the event. Avoid alcohol the day before or dairy-based drinks on the day of the event.
  • What should I eat the night before?
For those of you tackling the runs you will need to ensure you top up on carbohydrates the night before the event. Foods such as rice, pasta and potatoes are an excellent source of carbs. Try to avoid heavy foods such as steaks and fried food!

Walkers should also aim to eat a light meal but need not load up on carbohydrates.
  • What should I wear?
The average forecast for Melbourne during October is around 16 degree Celsius but remember in Melbourne anything can happen.

It is important to be aware the Melbourne Marathon is not a fashion show. Make sure you are wearing clothing you are comfortable in (check weather details night before). As part of TeamMONASH™ and to be united as a team we encourage you to wear the issued sports top.

  • Footwear
As nice as it is to have brand new pair of shoes on the day it is vital you have ‘run’ them in so as to avoid any discomfort during your event.
  • Pre-Event Warm Up
For each event there will be a warm up at the Monash Sport Marquee. Warm up is an important part of letting your body know that you are about to engage in exercise and helps prevent injuries and some soreness.

Volunteering - Can you lend a hand?

As a member of the TeamMONASH™ Support Crew you have the opportunity to enjoy the fun and the experience of the Melbourne Marathon without even raising a sweat.

All volunteers receive a certificate, an official Support Crew t-shirt and access to the TeamMONASH™ marquee on the day.

If you would like to be involved as a volunteer please send an email to volunteer@sport.monash.edu.au stating your name, email address and a mobile phone or daytime contact number.
